Burfoot headlines field of local finishers at Boston Marathon

Age certainly wasn't a barrier for local runners competing in the prestigious Boston Marathon on Monday.

Twelve of the competitors from southeastern Connecticut ranged in age from 50 to 70. They survived the tough course and warm conditions to finish the race.

Amby Burfoot, a 70-year-old Mystic resident and 1968 Boston Marathon champion, enjoyed his 26.2 mile run, finishing in four hours, 18 minutes, 29 seconds.

"It went great," Burfoot said in a short finish line interview on the Boston Marathon Twitter feed. "It was wonderful. It's always tough coming off Heartbreak (Hill) and running Boylston (Street). I thought I was going to get under 4:15, couldn't do it. Good race, nonetheless. Fabulous crowd support."

Scott Todd, 60, of Uncasville crossed the line in 4:30:42 while 68-year-old Leeland Cole-Chu of Salem finished in 5:05.47 and Lisbon's Charles Brenker, 65, had a time of 4:13:34.
