    Local roundup: Mitchell baseball completes sweep of Lesley

    Boston — Mitchell College completed a three-game sweep of Lesley with a 12-8 win in a New England Collegiate Conference baseball game on Sunday.

    Earlier, the Mariners beat Lesley 8-4 in the conclusion of Saturday's suspended game. Steven Gonzalez was 3-for-5 with four RBI and Garet Griffin singled, homered and drove in four runs in the scheduled game for Mitchell (21-10, 9-3).

    In the suspended game, New London's Eddie Santiago got the win.

    In other games:

    • Avery Point split a doubleheader with Northern Essex, winning the second game 6-2 and losing the opener 5-4 in eight innings. Dan Garofalo (4-2) pitched six strong innings for the win in the second game, allowing five hits and two unearned runs with seven strikeouts and two walks. Mike Chiovitti and Waterford's Mike Rocchetti each scored twice in the second game for the Pointers. Mystic's Cooper Robinson singled, homered, scored twice and drove in two runs in the first game for Avery Point (21-11).

    • Clark beat Coast Guard Academy 12-1 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference finale for both teams. Freshman Jon Pressley broke up the shutout with an RBI single in the eighth inning for Coast Guard (12-23, 3-14).

    Men's tennis

    • Connecticut College swept doubles play to beat host Coast Guard 6-3. The teams of Daniel Maffa-Will Cannon, Ben Sachs-Charlie Williams and Johnny Cissel-Patrick Farrell won and the Camels (5-9) got singles wins from Scott Brown, Sachs and Farrell. Coast Guard (6-8) got wins from Tom Hackett, John Hu and Mike Melampy.

    College softball

    • Mitchell College swept a NECC doubleheader from Southern Vermont, winning the opener 7-3 and the second game 5-4. Mitchell (9-18, 5-11) won the second game when Samantha DelConte scored on a fielder's choice by Megan Elphick of Waterford in the bottom of the seventh. Suzanne Vachon was 6-for-8 with three RBI in the two games for Mitchell and DelConte was 5-for-7 with five runs scored.

    • Coast Guard ended its season with a NEWMAC doubleheader split. The Bears won the opener 11-3 and Emerson won the second game by the same score, with both games ending after five innings. Sharaya Simco had two hits and drove in three runs, Emma Hvozdovich was 3-for-4 with a double, homer, three runs and two RBI and Malia Hindle drove in two runs in the opener for Coast Guard (17-18, 4-14).

    Men's basketball

    • Steve Enoch, who prepped at St. Thomas More before playing at UConn, told ESPN that he will attend Louisville in the fall. Enoch, a 6-foot-10 center, announced his intention to transfer from UConn after the season. He will finish the spring semester in Storrs, then join the Cardinals, where he will have to sit out the 2017-18 season. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

    H.S. boys' track & field

    • Ledyard's sprint medley relay team of Travon Brown, James Smith, Ian Kamperschroer and Zak King was victorious in 3:48.07 during Saturday's Panther Invitational. The Colonels also placed third in the event with Preston Paulton, Xavier Whitmore, Berkeley Wachtmann and Sean Healy finishing in 3:59.55, and added a third in the 4x100-meter relay as Herman Winston, Smith, Paulton and Brown finished in 45.54 seconds. Individually, Collin Wiltshire was third in the triple jump (39 feet, 1 inch) and fifth in the 110 hurdles (16.91), Smith was fourth in the 200 (23.62), Harold Phillips was fourth in the long jump (17-3) and Winston was fifth in the 100 (11.68).

    H.S. girls' track & field

    • Ledyard's 4x400 relay team of Shannon Torres, Emily Hopkins, Isabelle Mercer and Claudia Jackson placed second in 4:48.89 in Saturday's Panther Invitational. A second Ledyard team of Julia Paul, Brooke Berlin, Abby Campbell and Ally Tran was sixth in 5:16.96. Also for the Colonels, Delaney Gagnon was third in the javelin (96-9), Olivia Crawford was fourth in the 300 hurdles (53.65) and Jade Langworthy was sixth in the 100 (14.60).

    H.S. boys' lacrosse

    • Jack O'Leary, Pat Brady and Jack Feeley combined for 13 goals and seven assists in St. Bernard/Wheeler's 20-2 win over Griswold on Saturday.

    Road racing

    • Groton's Brandy LeClair won the Chikumbuso Challenge 10K in North Stonington, finishing in 41:06. Patrick Casey of Groton was the top men's finisher, coming in second in 41:34. Also making the top five were Teddy Nosiku of North Stonington (44:17), Jim Tiernan of Pawcatuck (44:42) and Valerie Ballek of Haddam (45:02).

    • Jim Rosenberger of Waterford won the Niantic Boardwalk 5K in 17:33 and Raquel Scotto of Jewett City was the top women's finisher, coming in 22nd in 21:56. Also finishing in the top five were Brian Whitney of Niantic (17:55), Brendan Tierney of Bolton (18:42), Chris Merrifield of Niantic (18:47) and Joe Gionet of Enfield (19:00).

    • Chase Carnot of Pawcatuck won the Steven E. Donahue Memorial 3-mile race in Pawcatuck with a time of 19:47. Amanda Travis of Moosup was the top women's finisher, coming in 10th in 22:08. Also cracking the top five were Patrick McGugan of Stonington (20:06), Sam Donahue of Pawcatuck (20:20, Ben French of Stonington (20:53) and Emanuel Murphy of Pawcatuck (21:23).
