Local roundup: Cape Cod Baseball League to induct Dennis Long into Hall of Fame

Chatham, Mass. — Dennis Long, a two-sport start at East Lyme High School who went on to play basketball and baseball at UConn, was one of seven former players and one long-time administrator named for induction into the 2017 Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame on Monday.

Long, who pitched for the Hyannis Mets for three summers (1977-79) will be honored during the CCBL's annual induction ceremony on Nov. 18 at The Chatham Bars Inn.

He will be joined by major league pitchers Justin Masterson (San Diego State) of Wareham and Jeremy Sowers (Vanderbilt) of Wareham, league batting champion Tim McIntosh (Minnesota) of Chatham, power-hitting Steve Newell (UMass) of Wareham and former major league infield and current coach Joey Cora (Vanderbilt) of Chatham.

Tom Yankus (Williams) of Orleans will be inducted as a player, coach, field manager and umpire while current CCBL president Chuck Sturtevant will be honored as an administrator from his days as the general manager at Falmouth and Bourne.

Long's final season (1979) at the Cape was his best when he went 8-1, made the CCBL All-Star team and helped lead the Mets to the Cape League championship. He finished 18-7 overall with a 3.20 earned run average and was drafted by the Texas Rangers in 1980.

Long continues to be involved in baseball on the coaching level, where he offers private instruction to young pitchers and position players, and as general manager, part-owner and pitching coach of the Mystic Schooners, which won the New England Collegiate Baseball League title in 2016.
