Local roundup: Tigers sweep ValleyCats at Dodd

Norwich — Five Connecticut pitchers combined for 12 shutout innings as the Connecticut Tigers completed a doubleheader sweep of the Tri-City ValleyCats on Tuesday night at Dodd Stadium.

The Tigers won the opener 2-1 in a game that was picked up in the fifth inning after being suspended by rain on June 30. They then came back to take the nightcap 1-0, the only run scoring on an RBI single by Colby Bortles.

Connecticut trailed 1-0 when the first game resumed, but Will Veset and Burris Warner (1-0) combined to pitch five shutout innings. The Tigers tied the game on a double-steal in the sixth and won it in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Hector Martinez.

Dane Myers pitched five shutout innings in the second game before Dean Aldridge (1-0) and closer Drew Carlton (sixth save) shut the door.

The teams play again at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Scott has done a tremendous job working with the pitching staff at Maine, and his experience as a two-way player will be an invaluable addition for the entire program."
