    Local roundup: Stonington rolls past Thames River 49-6

    Stonington — Josh Curtin scored three touchdowns, two on kickoff returns, as Stonington beat Thames River 49-6 in a nonleague high school football game on Thursday night.

    Nate Miller and Riley Burnside had two touchdowns each for the Bears (3-6).

    Curtin returned a kickoff 77 yards for a TD and had a 63-yard scoring run in the first half, helping Stonington to a 36-6 lead. And Curtin opened the second half with an 82-yard kickoff return for a score. Miller had TD runs of 45 and 56 yards and Burnside had a 56-yard touchdown run and returned an interception 36 yards for a score.

    Thames River (4-5) led 6-0. 

    In other games:

    • Plainfield jumped out to a 21-0 lead at halftime and went on to beat Waterford 36-0. The Lancers (0-9) finish off their season at East Lyme on Thanksgiving Day.

    "Usually they say you can throw the records out on Thanksgiving,'' said Waterford coach John Strecker. "We'll see what happens.''

    Waterford's Peter Turello intercepted a pair of passes. 

    H.S. swimming

    • Waterford's Sophia Podeszwa was the top local finisher in the State Open Diving Championships at Middletown High School, placing 15th overall with 390.95 points. Norwich Free Academy's Anna Ciriello wound up 21st in the event with 357.95, which was won by New Canaan's Claire Ross with 498.60 points.

    Black Wolves

    • New England Black Wolves forward took a break from training camp to greet fans on hand for a Season Ticket Member party. The Black Wolves, who open their National Lacrosse League season on Dec. 8 at home against the reigning champion Georgia Swarm, have a pair of scrimmages this weekend at Iroquois Lacrosse Arena in Hagersville, Ontario, Canada.

    "We're excited and we can't wait for the first game," said Buchanan, who posed for photos and signed autographs during the event. "It's all about the fans. The fans make the game so much more fun for us on the floor. The energy in the building last year...It keeps getting better each year. It's great for me to mingle with people and get to know them a little bit better on a personal note."
