    Local roundup: Waterford now 2-0 in New England Babe Ruth tourney

    Augusta, Me. — Waterford keeps rolling along at the New England Babe Ruth 15-year-old baseball tournament.

    The District 6 and state champions beat Vermont champ St. Johnsbury 17-0 in five innings to improve to 2-0 in Pool A play, which concludes on Sunday with Waterford playing fellow unbeaten Concord, N.H. The winner will receive a bye in Monday's first round and a spot in Tuesday's semifinals. The loser is the No. 2 seed from Pool A. 

    Owen Coderre led the way for Waterford, collecting three hits, driving in four runs and scoring three times. Coderre was also the winning pitcher, combining with Dan Driscoll on a one-hitter. Sam Lanuza had three hits, including a double, and scored three runs, Ryan O'Connell doubled, scored twice and drove in two runs and Ryan Bakken doubled and drove in two runs.

    Bakken will start on the mound against Concord, according to Waterford coach Dave Laffey. Waterford broke the game open by scoring 12 runs in the top of the second inning. They sent 17 batters to the plate and had seven hits in the inning. After seeing all the teams involved, Laffey knows his team can hold its own.

    "We're one of the four best teams for sure,'' said Laffey. "Concord is good. They beat the Keene team that was there the last two years.''  

    Legion baseball

    • Zone 6 champion Niantic opened play in the state tournament with a 1-0 over Winsted in eight innings. Trevor Delesdernier pitched a four-hitter for the win. Niantic walked off with the victory when Matt Abbey's two-out single scored Tom Mason. Niantic hosts West Hartford at noon on Sunday.

    Schooners lose

    • The Mystic Schooners lost to the North Adams SteepleCats in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, 8-4. Chris Winkel (UConn) and Mic Wilson (Stony Brook) hit solo home runs for the Schooners (19-18). It was Winkel's seventh of the summer.

    Tigers are rained out

    • The Connecticut Tigers will play a doubleheader Sunday after being rained out of their New York-Penn League game at the Aberdeen IronBirds. The teams will play a pair of seven-inning game at Ripken Stadium, beginning at 3 p.m. 

    DAZ tournament (11-12)

    • Jack Ballou struck out 11 as he pitched Groton to a 9-2 win over North Stonington in the Dominic A. Zuliani tournament. Ethan Chavez hit a three-run homer, Braxton Rios had a solo shot and Calvin McCoy was 3-for-3 for Groton.

    • Matt Scarpa's grand slam helped Ledyard to a 23-4 win over North Stonington on Friday. Dylan Gorman was the winning pitcher, giving up two hits in four innings with two strikeouts and Derek Kennedy had three hits for Ledyard. Kyle Kessler homered for North Stonington and teammate James Main tripled.

    • Matt Pero drove in two runs as New London beat Groton 9-3 on Thursday. Derrel Mitchell was the winning pitcher. Jack Ballou doubled and Ethan Chavez had a run-scoring single for Groton.
