Coast Guard silenced in 13-0 football loss to unbeaten MIT

Cambridge, Mass. — Unbeaten MIT, the top-ranked Division III team in New England, held Coast Guard Academy to a season-low 118 yards of offense during a 13-0 victory over the Bears in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference football game on Saturday.

Coast Guard, which could have grabbed a share of first place with a win, fell to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the NEWMAC. The Engineers are 7-0, 4-0.

The Bears were also held to season-lows of 66 yards passing and 52 yards rushing as they managed just nine first downs. MIT also dominated the time of possession, 37:50 to 22:10.

The loss also marked the first time Coast Guard was shut out since a 51-0 defeat to Western New England in 2015.

Junior quarterback Ryan Jones was 11 of 17 for 66 yards while sophomore Jon Wagner led the Bears with 33 yards rushing on nine carries.

MIT finished with 298 yards of total offense, 190 rushing and 108 passing. Freshman Ashton Robinson and junior John Robertson each had 74 rushing yards to lead the Engineers.

The Engineers got on the board early in the second quarter for the lone points of the first half as senior Eddy Garcia-Montes caught a six-yard touchdown pass in the corner of the end zone from senior Udgam Goyal for the 6-0 edge. The drive was set up by a 15-yard Coast Guard punt as the Engineers took over at the CGA 42-yard line.

The lone scoring opportunity in the third quarter came from the Bears, but a 25-yard field goal attempt by Cole Austin was blocked by Tyler Ray.

The Engineers pushed the lead to two possessions with 10:21 remaining in the fourth quarter as junior Cole Baker went up the middle and pushed the pile into the end zone from two yards out.

Three Coast Guard players had double-digit tackles as Jake Behne finished with a game-high 14, and Mark Wicke and Colby Coco added 10 apiece.

The Bears have a bye next week before playing their final home game of the season on Saturday, Nov. 3 against WPI in a NEWMAC game at noon.
