    Local roundup: Rajai Davis signs minor league deal with Mets

    New York — The New York Mets announced Monday that they have agreed to a minor league contract with 38-year-old outfielder Rajai Davis, who will report to major league spring training.

    Davis, the former New London High School and UConn-Avery Point great, hit .224 with one home run, six RBIs and 21 steals in 101 games and 216 plate appearances for Cleveland in 2018.

    His two-run, eighth-inning homer off Aroldis Chapman tied Game 7 of the 2016 World Series for Cleveland against the Chicago Cubs, a game the Indians lost in 10 innings.

    Davis has a .262 career average with 61 homers, 379 RBIs and 415 stolen bases in 13 major league seasons.

    Women's basketball

    • Waterford sophomore Mia Brennan scored a career-high 49 points as UConn Avery Point rallied for a 92-77 win over CCRI. Brennan helped the Pointers (8-3) hang on by making six free throws in the final minute. Waterford's Rebekah Sanders added 19 points and 17 rebounds while Julitza Delgado had 11 points and New London's Kenya Capers had 10 rebounds.

    Men's basketball

    • Montville's John Domijan had 10 points and nine rebounds during Avery Point's 87-46 loss to CCRI. Waterford's Trevor Yeomans added nine points for the Pointers (4-10) while Mitchell Holdmeyer had 10 rebounds.

    Girls' basketball

    • Miranda Arruda had 13 points and five steals to highlight unbeaten Stonington's 56-20 win over Ledyard in an Eastern Connecticut Conference Division II game. Aliza Bell added 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Bears (4-0, 2-0), who led 26-7 after the first quarter. Katie Krupansky scored 10 points for the Colonels (1-1, 0-1).

    • Kellie Nudd had 25 points and seven rebounds as Bacon Academy rolled to a 60-40 win over Fitch in an ECC Division II game. Rita Sefransky scored 15 points to lead the Falcons (0-3, 0-2), while Alyssa Virtue finished with 10.

    • Miranda McGuire scored 18 points as O'Brien Tech pulled away in the second half for a 50-22 win over Grasso Tech in the Connecticut Technical Conference. Samarie Delgado scored 10 points for the Eagles, who trailed 22-14 at the half.

    Boys' basketball

    • Aedan Using had 33 points and 10 rebounds as Old Lyme pulled away in the second half for an 81-65 victory over Westbrook in the Shoreline Conference. The game was tied at 34-all at halftime before the Wildcats (2-0, 2-0) outscored Westbrook 22-9 in the third quarter to take control. Brady Sheffield added 11 points, six assists and two blocked shots and Ray Doll scored 11 points for Old Lyme to overcome a 48-point night by Westbrook's Seth Caslin that included seven 3-pointers.

    • Zac Southard scored 22 points as Montville opened its season with a 75-48 non-league win over Grasso Tech. Ethan McKinney added 13 points and six assists for the Indians while Griffin Pontbriant added 10 points and 13 rebounds. Donnel Brown led Grasso Tech with 12 points.

    • Zack Dunnack scored 26 points as Lyman Memorial spoiled Wheeler's ECC Division IV opener by defeating the Lions 81-37. Ian Spracklin led Wheeler (1-1, 0-1) with 12 points.

    H.S. football

    • Fitch defensive lineman Nick Helbig was named to the Walter Camp Football Foundation's All-Connecticut second team. Helbig will be recognized for his achievements during the 12th High School Breakfast of Champions on Saturday, Jan. 12, in New Haven as part of the foundation's annual weekend festivities at Yale University.

    The foundation will also honor the 2018 state champions — Greenwich (Class LL), Hand (Class L), St. Joseph (Class M) and Bloomfield (Class S). It will also name its 2018 Coach of the Year (finalists are Greenwich's John Marinelli, Hand's David Mastroianni and Stafford/East Windsor/Somer's Brian Mazzone), and its 2018 Player of the Year (finalists are Sheehan's Terrence Bogan, Bloomfield's Ky'Juon Butler and Greenwich's Gavin Muir).

    Helbig was the only local player named to the two teams although a pair of Eastern Connecticut Conference players, Killingly's Matt Phelan (offensive line) and Luke Desaulnier (placekicker) were named to the first team.

    NLL playoff format

    • The National Lacrosse League, which includes the New England Black Wolves, announced it has expanded its playoffs to eight teams this season with each division earning four berths. The East and West divisions will be seeded 1-4 for the first round with No. 1 hosting No. 4 and No. 2 hosting No. 3. The two winners in each division will play for the division championship at the highest remaining seed and the winners will meet in a best-of-three series for the NLL title with the highest remaining seed hosting games one and three (if necessary).
