NRC to hold meeting on Millstone security issues

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced Monday that it has scheduled a closed conference with Dominion Resources officials to discuss its security-related findings from a Nov. 24 inspection of the Millstone Power Station that could result in enforcement action.

The meeting will take place Feb. 17 in King of Prussia, Pa., where the NRC's Region 1 headquarters is located. Attending will be 15 NRC officials and six Dominion officials, including John Daugherty, site vice president of the Waterford nuclear power plant. Because the finding pertains to security issues, it is closed to the public.

The agenda for the meeting includes a presentation by the NRC of the "apparent violation, security significance and regulatory concerns," followed by a presentation by Dominion.

The NRC notified Dominion on Jan. 5 that its inspection uncovered two security-related findings, one of "very low" safety significance, and the other of "greater than very low."

The NRC plans to finalize its decision on the finding within 90 days of the notification. The decision could result in increased NRC oversight of the plant, according to Neil Sheehan, spokesman for the NRC.

Comment threads are monitored for 48 hours after publication and then closed.
