Kid music act Ralph's World to perform Saturday in New London's Hygienic Art Park

    Ralph Covert

Here's the thing about children's music. Most of it is made by adults.

    That seems rather presumptuous.

You don't see Little Jimmy and Little Cindy – ages 4 and 7, respectively – clambering onstage at the Garde Arts Center and, in piping, strident voices, ordering Pierre Boulez offstage so they can offer up some minimalism for the Big People.

I don't remember Tiny Franklin kicking Merle Haggard's legs out from under him and then adjusting the mic stand to croon "If We Make It Through December."

Now, I DO like the idea of Mrs. Quentin's fifth grade class doing the entire "Enter the Wu Tang (36 Chambers)" for the autumn talent show at Wilcox Elementary. The truth is, though, for now, the reality is that adults make children's music and children don't cover Rush.

In that spirit, consider Ralph's World, a premiere children's rock band entertaining Saturday in New London's Hygienic Art Park for "A Kindie Summer Kick-Off" concert. The titular Ralph would be Ralph Covert, once of the indie rock act Bad Examples, who grew up and decided to form a band to make tunes for kids AND adults. As per albums such as "Peggy's Pie Parlor," "The Amazing Adventures of Kid Astro," and the soon-to-be-released "Rocks and Reads," Ralph's World connects with the whole human race in big fashion.

Appropriately, New London's own kids' music superstar band, Steve Elci & Friends, appears in support.
