Malloy announces $30 million in transportation funding

The state will distribute millions of dollars for road repairs to more than a dozen local towns, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced Monday.

The money comes in the second of two $30 million installments of Town Aid Road funding, which municipalities can use for highway maintenance, snow removal, tree trimming and other efforts, according to a news release from Malloy’s office.

The state will also spend $68.9 million to resurface state roadways this year, according to the release.

Road paving projects will begin in earnest April 1, the traditional start of the construction season in Connecticut. According to the release, at least 250 miles of two-lane roads throughout the state will be repaved this year.

East Lyme, Groton, Ledyard, Lyme, Montville, New London, Norwich, Old Lyme, Salem, Stonington and Waterford all received hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Of those towns, Lyme received the smallest amount, $180,114, and Norwich received the largest, at $499,259.

“In Connecticut, we are in the middle of a critical conversation on what we need to do to build a best-in-class transportation system that provides residents and businesses with real solutions for problems that the state can no longer put off,” Malloy said in the release. “Providing our towns and cities with increased funding for local transportation projects is an important part of these efforts.”

The towns can use the money to supplement their local budgets for transportation projects, Department of Transportation Commissioner James P. Redeker said in the release.

Funding for both the Town Aid Road grants and statewide road paving were approved at last Friday’s meeting of the State Bond Commission.
