Salem school board approves proposed budget with 0.26 percent increase

Salem — The Board of Education voted Monday night to approve a $10,672,882 budget for the 2016-2017 fiscal year, less than two days before the town budget goes to a public hearing.

The budget reflects a 0.26 percent increase over the 2015-16 spending plan.

The initial budget of $10,859,710, a 2 percent increase, was rejected by the Board of Finance at the March 10 meeting.

Finance board members cited declining enrollment in their decision and approved a 0.5 percent increase. Motions to pass budgets with a 1 percent increase and a 0 percent increase also were rejected at that meeting.

The rest of the town budget is $3,701,017, a 2.2 percent increase over last year.

The public hearing for the 2016-17 budget will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Salem School.
