New London finance board recommends council's budget

New London — The Board of Finance on Thursday passed budget figures that remain untouched from a previous City Council proposal.

The board approved $46,099,970 for a general government budget and $42,445,400 in funding for education. The general government side represents a $189,850 increase from Mayor Michael Passero’s proposal. The City Council and finance board both have voted to support Passero’s education spending plan, which flat funds the budget and is more than $1 million less than the Board of Education had requested.

The board voted 4-1 in favor of the city budget. The initial vote on the education side was a 2-2 tie with board chairman Robert Funk abstaining since he is the finance director for the school system. A second vote on the education budget passed 3-1.

The budget figures are now forwarded to City Council as maximum expenditures for final approval.

The council may choose to cut further but cannot increase the figures without authorization from eight members of the Appropriations Board, which consists of the full City Council and finance board members.

The city council considers the budget figures again at their meeting on Monday.
