Preston voters return to the polls Tuesday for second vote on school budget

Preston — The second referendum on the proposed $11.2 million 2016-17 school budget will be held Tuesday at Town Hall, with the polls open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Residents voted last week to make no changes to the proposed budget after the Board of Finance cut $100,000 following the May 17 defeat of the first budget.

The finance board voted to use $740,000 from the town's surplus fund to limit the proposed tax increase of 0.8 mills, bringing the rate to 23.8 mills in the coming year.

Voters approved the use of surplus at last week's town meeting.

The Board of Finance will hold a special meeting at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Town Hall either to vote on the final tax rate if the referendum approves the budget or to act on changes to the school budget if it is rejected.

Also on the ballot are two advisory questions asking residents if they believe the school budget is too high or too low.
