Eastern Pequots elect six to tribal council

North Stonington — Four incumbents and two newcomers won election to the Eastern Pequot Tribal Council in voting that took place July 23, according to the tribe’s chairwoman, Katherine Sebastian Dring.

Re-elected to three-year terms were Brenda Geer, vice chairwoman; Lynn Powers, recording secretary; Valerie Gambrell, comptroller; and La’ Tasha Maddox.

Juan Hazard and Carole Maddox were elected to their first terms.

Sebastian Dring and four other incumbents — Joseph Perry Jr., treasurer, Tyrone Gambrell, Larry Pemberton and Joanne Silva Njoka — were not up for re-election.

Incumbent Angie Oliver, whose term is ending, did not seek re-election.

Following the voting, which took place during the tribe’s annual meeting, the new council was sworn into office by Roy Sebastian, Chief Hockeo, the tribe’s sachem for life. Sebastian, chairman of the Eastern Pequots from 1976 to 1997, also was celebrating his 90th birthday.

The tribe's Constitution provides for a 14-member council, meaning three seats remain vacant.
