Block Island wind farm construction complete, company says

Block Island, R.I. — The company building the five-turbine wind farm offshore from Block Island announced Tuesday that construction is complete.

Deepwater Wind said the final turbine blade was lifted onto the fifth turbine tower on Aug. 18, completing the 18-day final construction phase of the country's first offshore wind farm.

Construction was completed on budget and several days ahead of schedule, the company said in a news release.

Since then, the project’s three main offshore installation vessels have demobilized from the construction site.

GE Renewable Energy’s commissioning work is underway, and the wind farm is expected to be generating power commercially by the end of the year, the company said.
