Montville to hand out larger recycling bins, implementing biweekly collection

Montville — Beginning this week, residents should start getting new, bigger recycling bins from Willimantic Waste that will be collected every other week beginning April 3.

The Town Council voted last year to amend the town’s contract with Willimantic Waste — which collects recycling waste from residential customers — to allow them to collect residential recycling every other week, instead of weekly.

The change will save the town about $300,000 over the current five-year contract, Mayor Ronald McDaniel said last year.

Willimantic Waste will deliver the new 95-gallon containers for free this week. Residents can keep their old 10-gallon recycling bins or bring them to the town transfer station to be recycled.

All residents' recycling days will stay the same, except that collection will happen on the same weekday every other week instead of every week.

Several southeastern Connecticut towns, including Norwich, have recycling pickup contracts with Willimantic Waste.

The company sorts the recyclables at its Willimantic facility, then sells recycled goods in both local and international markets.
