Osten, Maynard to present medals to veterans on Monday

Groton -- State Sens. Cathy Osten, D-19th District, and Andrew Maynard, D-18th District, along with state Department of Veterans’ Affairs Commissioner Sean Connolly, will award the Connecticut Veterans Wartime Service Medal to more than 75 area veterans on Monday at 1 p.m. at the Submarine Force Library and Museum on Crystal Lake Road.

The General Assembly created the medal in 2005 to honor all Connecticut veterans with qualifying wartime military service. The two senators have contacted veterans in the towns in two districts to let them know about the medal.

Last December, Maynard and Connolly presented medals to 54 veterans whose service ranged from World War II to Iraq and Afghanistan during a similar event at the Pawcatuck VFW. Honorably discharged veterans who served 90 days during wartime or less if the action lasted less than 90 days and who was either a state resident when called to active duty or now lives in the state is eligible for the award. Approximately 200,000 veterans live in the state.
