Fire displaces family of five in Norwich

Norwich — A family of five was displaced after a fire damaged their home late Tuesday at 110 Yantic Lane.

The Yantic Fire Department responded at 11:53 p.m. to find fire in the area of the home’s chimney. The fire burned a portion of the first floor and extended to the second, according to Yantic Fire Lt. Ray Henry.

Henry said firefighters connected a hose to a hydrant about 2,000 feet away from the home. Yantic received mutual aid from Taftville, East Great Plain, Laurel Hill, Bozrah and Mohegan Tribal fire departments.

The city’s building inspector ruled that the home is temporarily uninhabitable.

The American Red Cross is helping the family of five — three adults and two children — with emergency housing, food and clothing needs. City records show the home is owned by Harold and Lucy Larsen.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the marshal's office.
