Two hikers rescued from Lantern Hill in North Stonington

North Stonington — Two hikers who became lost in the woods shortly after sunset and needed medical attention were rescued by fire and emergency crews about 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

North Stonington Fire Chief Charlie Steinhart V said the female hiker is pregnant and was suffering a diabetic emergency when the couple telephoned for help about 7:40 p.m.

She was hiking with a male companion near the top of Lantern Hill when they became lost, Steinhart said.

The hikers kept in phone contact with emergency dispatchers until fire rescue and ambulance crews from Ledyard and North Stonington located them using all-terrain vehicles, Steinhart said.

Medics from North Stonington and American Ambulance assisted the female hiker at the scene.

Both hikers were taken to The William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich, Steinhart said.

The names and other information about the two hikers was not available Wednesday evening.
