New London man arrested on eight charges following pursuit

New London — State police arrested a New London man on eight charges following a Wednesday night pursuit that spanned from Norwich to New London and ended with the use of a Taser.

Derek Alexander, 47, of 205 Williams St., Apt. 1, was charged Wednesday with endangering a highway worker, driving with a refused, suspended or revoked registration or license, reckless driving, disobeying the signal of an officer — first offense, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in a construction zone, possession of drug paraphernalia, interfering with an officer — simple assault, and first-degree reckless endangerment.

Alexander also was charged Thursday on a warrant for second-degree failure to appear in court.

According to police, a trooper tried to pull Alexander over after the officer observed Alexander going 89 miles per hour in a 65 mph zone on Interstate 395 northbound.

Alexander, police said, failed to stop, leaving the highway at old Exit 83 and re-entering it going southbound.

Police on two separate occasions deployed stop sticks that had "little to no effect on the vehicle's tires," according to the incident report.

Police said Alexander took Route 32 and Interstate 95 into New London before turning on Colman Street, exiting his vehicle and attempting to flee on foot.

According to police, the trooper used his Taser to subdue Alexander and take him into custody after Alexander ignored the trooper's request for him to stop.

Alexander was scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
