Pole fire on Tilley Street knocks out power in New London

New London — A pole fire that began at around 6:50 Tuesday morning knocked out power to customers in parts of the city, according to the New London Fire Department.

Battalion Chief Roger Tompkins said the fire about halfway up Tilley Street near the intersection of Washington Street began due to a short circuit, and the fire department arrived within five minutes and shut down the roadway.

The fire was extinguished shortly thereafter, and Tompkins said that street remained barricaded at around 8:45 a.m. as Eversource staff began working to fix the outage.

About 389 customers in New London did not have power for part of the morning, according to Eversource's outage map.

As of 9:13 a.m., Eversource had cleared the outages in New London, according to its website.
