Norwich woman charged with first-degree escape

Norwich — A Norwich woman with an extensive criminal history is facing a new charge after allegedly staying at a residence other than the one approved upon her January release from prison.

Angelic Griffin, 41, of 16 Oak St., second floor, Norwich, was charged Friday in Montville with first-degree escape.

According to an arrest warrant application written by parole officer Scott Farrey, Griffin was sentenced to one year in York Correctional Institution on Aug. 1 last year, but was transferred to transitional supervision Jan. 11.

At that time, she was given a copy of her conditions of release, which included residing on the second floor of 16 Oak St. and making no residence changes without asking for permission from the parole officer.

According to Farrey, Griffin's sponsor called Farrey on Feb. 29 to let him know Griffin wasn't staying at her approved residence.

In the next few days, the affidavit states, Griffin missed required parole and Southeastern Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency appointments and couldn't be located at 16 Oak St.

On March 8, Farrey wrote, Farrey reached Griffin by phone, at which point she told him she'd cut her wrists and was bleeding.

She told Farrey only that she was "off of Bank Street in New London," according to the affidavit.

Neither police in New London nor police in Norwich, where a cellphone ping suggested Griffin was later on March 8, located Griffin that day.

State police said they located her around 1:30 p.m. Friday on Interstate 395 north in Montville.

Records show Griffin has been convicted eight times since 2007 on charges including possession of narcotics, first-degree escape, fifth-degree larceny, third-degree larceny and interfering with an officer.

Violation of probation charges are attached to several of Griffin's cases.

Griffin, who is being held on a $25,000 bond, initially appeared in New London Superior Court Monday, where her case was transferred to Norwich Superior Court.

She was scheduled to appear in Norwich Superior Court Wednesday morning.
