Ledyard man charged with gun threat in Mystic beating

Mystic — Police have charged a Ledyard man with pointing a hand gun at an employee of the Hyatt Place hotel last fall and threatening to kill him before another man beat him in the head with a small bat.

Jonathan E. Mays, 27, of 5 Jessica Lane was charged Tuesday with conspiracy to commit first-degree assault, first-degree threatening and breach of peace after police obtained a warrant for his arrest following a lengthy investigation.

Mays was arraigned in New London Superior Court on Wednesday, at which time his bond was left at $100,000 cash and he was ordered not to have any contact with the victim or possess any weapons.

His next court date is Sept 1.

According to the warrant for Mays’ arrest, police responded to a report of an assault in front of the Route 27 hotel at 1:20 a.m. on Nov 23. When they arrived, they said they found the victim semi-conscious and barely breathing at one point.

The man was later able to tell them that a car pulled up and one man pointed the gun at him and then the other began to repeatedly beat him in the head with the bat and also punched and kicked him in the head.

He was able to identify the man who beat him as his current girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend, with whom he had been arguing via text messages and phone calls.

That man, Jonathan A. Valladares, 26, of Groton was charged immediately after the incident with first-degree assault, second-degree breach of peace and carrying a dangerous weapon.

He is free on a $100,000 bond and is next scheduled to appear in court Aug. 18.

The warrant states that the victim suffered a three-inch laceration to the back of his head that required 17 stitches and 5 staples to close. He also had hand injuries from trying to shield his head from the blows.

The victim later told police that he was “100 percent sure” the man who pointed the gun at him was Mays after seeing his photo on the Facebook page of Valladares’ sister and at work at Foxwoods Resort Casino.

Mays told police he had been working at the Fossil store at the Tanger Outlets at Foxwoods until 2 a.m. that night day but a witness told police that he saw Mays get in a car and leave the outlets at about 12:50 a.m.
