Norwich — Police on Wednesday morning arrested a local man who they said is responsible for the stab wounds that left another man with life-threatening injuries Tuesday night.

Cedric Edwards, 51, of 66 McKinley Ave. was charged with first-degree assault, first-degree robbery, third-degree assault, sixth-degree larceny and first-degree reckless endangerment.

Police said they were in the process of investigating a 10:39 p.m. car crash in the area of 45 Union St. when they learned at least some of the men inside had been fighting prior to the crash.

Police said four men had been in the car, but the driver — who’d been stabbed twice in the chest — was walking down Broadway and two other men fled the scene.

Police identified the driver as Kristopher Goodrow, 40, of 24 Broadway, Niantic. Crews initially took him to William W. Backus Hospital for treatment, but he later was flown to Hartford Hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.

Assistant Registrar Miriam Thorburn said Tuesday night that she was in her car, which was parked on Broadway, when someone tapped on the driver side window just before 11 p.m.

According to Thorburn, the man said, “Call 911, I'm dying,” and then collapsed onto the sidewalk.

Police said a K-9 tracking effort to find the two men who fled wasn’t immediately successful, but that Detectives Anthony Gomes and Kevin Wilbur continued working into the night and thus were able to arrest Edwards Wednesday morning.

Police, who described Edwards as “a convicted felon with a lengthy arrest record,” said he’s being held on a $250,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwich Superior Court on Thursday.

Citing the ongoing investigation, police said they aren't releasing any more information at this time.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the incident to call Detective Gomes at (860) 886-5561, ext. 3155, or to email him at agomes@cityofnorwich.org. Residents also can call the Norwich Police Department’s anonymous tip line at (860) 886-5561, ext. 4.
