Montville — A man was shot and killed Sunday afternoon during a disturbance at a local motel that also left a Montville police officer injured.

State police said the man was shot after Montville police responded to a disturbance about 2:30 p.m. at the Chesterfield Lodge motel. They did not identify the man or say who shot him.

The Montville officer involved in the incident is being treated for a non-life-threatening injury, a state police spokesman said.

Investigators cordoned off the parking lot of the motel, which neighbors the Chesterfield Fire Department at the intersection of Route 85 and Grassy Hill Road, as they conducted their investigation Sunday evening.

State police are working to identify the man, and detectives from the Eastern District Major Crime Squad are investigating the shooting.

State police said there was no threat to the public following the incident.

The owner of the motel and the adjoining liquor store stood outside his business Sunday afternoon. The owner's son, Akash Patel, said he and his father had been working in the store's walk-in cooler when they realized police were outside.

Patel said he saw two officers in the parking lot. One of the officers, a woman, was bleeding from her head, he said. When he tried to bring them paper towels, he said the officers told him to stand back. Patel said two ambulances responded to the scene, but he did not see a shooting victim.

The motel's owner, Sam Patel, said there were no guests staying there Sunday.
