Fireworks seized this weekend in East Lyme

East Lyme — More than 100 fireworks that are not legal in the state were seized in Niantic over the weekend, according to the town's fire marshal.

The Fire Marshal's Office, along with the East Lyme Police Department and the Connecticut State Police Fire and Explosives Unit, seized the fireworks on Saturday and Sunday nights, according to a notice on East Lyme's Public Safety Facebook page.

Fire Marshal Richard Morris said by phone Monday that the fire and police agencies were stationed in areas of town — in Crescent Beach, Attawan Beach and Black Point — where people had complained about fireworks activities.

Most of the fireworks were seized on Saturday night, while some were seized on Sunday night, which was quieter, he said. Morris said the effort will continue tonight.

No one was charged, and the owners of the fireworks were cooperative, he said.

"Only sparklers and fountains, which are non-explosive and non-aerial, are legal in Connecticut," the notice on the Public Safety page states. "Sparklers and fountains can only be purchased and used by persons age 16 or older."
