State, local police enforcing distracted driving laws

State troopers around Connecticut will be stepping up enforcement of distracted driving laws through Aug. 16.

As part of its "U Drive. U Text. U Pay." campaign, troopers and participating local departments, including Groton Town and Waterford police, will be boosting efforts to "find and fine" people who use hand-held devices while driving, according to news releases issued Wednesday. Currently the fine is $150 for the first offense, $300 for the second and $500 for the third.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 3,500 people nationwide were killed and nearly 400,000 injured in 2015 in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers.

"Troopers have responded to countless crashes caused by distracted drivers — some of which have ended in fatalities," Col. Alaric J. Fox, commanding officer of the state police, said in a release. "The task of driving must have your full, undivided attention. Connecticut State Troopers urge you to put down the (cellphone) and do not pick it up before you arrive safely at your destination."
