Ledyard man dies in 2-vehicle crash on Center Groton Road

Ledyard — A 59-year-old Ledyard man has died following a two-vehicle accident on Center Groton Road on Tuesday morning, police said. A 28-year-old Groton man was taken to the hospital with injuries.

Police said in a news release that dispatch received an emergency call about 6:25 a.m. reporting an accident in the area of 1671 Center Groton Road (Route 117). First responders arriving on scene found two vehicles on fire with the occupants trapped inside, the report said.

According to the preliminary investigation, police said a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta, driven by 28-year-old Michael R. Evans of 14 Quincy Court, Groton, was heading north on the road, and a 1986 Chevy C20 pickup truck, driven by 59-year-old Brian Jolicoeur of 8 Tanglewood Drive, Ledyard, was heading south.

Ledyard police Chief John Rich said Tuesday evening that the two vehicles hit each other head on but at a slight angle.

The impact of the accident caused the Volkswagen Jetta to go into the east breakdown lane/shoulder and catch on fire, while it caused the pickup truck to overturn and also catch on fire and end up in the west shoulder, according to the release.

Evans was taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London for treatment of injuries, while Jolicoeur was pronounced dead on scene, the police said.

Ledyard police, Ledyard Fire Department, Gales Ferry Fire Department and American Ambulance responded, according to the release. Groton Town police, Groton Ambulance, an L+M Hospital medic and the state Department of Transportation also responded to the scene, it said.

Ledyard police and the Southeastern Connecticut Regional Traffic Unit are investigating, the release stated. Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to contact Ledyard police Officer Jason Pudvah at (860) 464-6400 or ofc.pudvah@ledyardCT.org.
