Pickup truck crashes into Norwich building

Norwich — A pickup truck crashed into a building at 2 Franklin St. on Saturday night after the driver appeared to have suffered a medical emergency, according to the city fire department.

The truck went straight across the center island of the rotary at Main and Franklin streets before striking the corner of the structure, which houses two businesses, according to a news release from the fire department. First responders were dispatched to the scene at 7:19 p.m.; city police arrived first, removed the driver from the vehicle and began CPR, the release said. A fire department crew secured the vehicle and building after arriving on scene, and a medical squad took over treatment of the driver.

American Ambulance transported the driver to Backus Hospital. No further information about the person’s identity or condition was immediately available.

The damage to the building was minor and was being assessed by the city’s building official, the release said. The businesses remained open but the rotary was closed while city police investigated the crash.
