    Local roundup: Old Lyme boys' soccer reaches Class S quarters with 2-1 victory

    Old Lyme - The third-seeded Old Lyme High School boys' soccer team advanced to the Class S state tournament quarterfinals with a 2-1 win Wednesday over No. 14 Coventry, 2-1 in second-round action.

    Senior Rowan Hallahan scored the game-winning goal off a deflected shot in the 59th minute.

    "We squeaked one out," Old Lyme coach Marc Vendetti said. "We played really well. As usual, we had some real chances to put the game behind, but we couldn't finish."

    The Wildcats (14-3-2) held a 25-4 edge in shots. After a scoreless first half, Danny Reid's unassisted goal in the 52nd minute handed Old Lyme a 1-0 lead and Coventry's David Touliot answered about four minutes later.

    Brian Winters finished with one save for the Wildcats, who host No. 6 Haddam-Killingworth in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. Friday. Old Lyme won the regular season meeting with H-K 2-0.

    In other state tournament games:

    • No. 9 East Lyme broke open a close Class L second-round game with four second-half goals, beating No. 8 Torrington 5-0. Jeremiah Northcutt and Nick Ghirardi each scored two goals and the Vikings added another one on an own goal while James Foster had two assists and goalie Billy Bragaw had five saves.

    East Lyme hosts No. 17 Branford at 2 p.m. Friday in the quarterfinals.

    • No. 5 Waterford dominated its Class M second-round game against No. 12 Granby, holding a 16-3 edge in shots. The Lancers lost, however, 1-0 on an own goal with about 30 minutes left. Goalie Austin Schwartz had two saves for Waterford (13-4-2).

    "We have a very good team and I was hoping to make a little bit more of a run in the tournament," Waterford coach Joe Mendonca Jr. said. "I just feel disappointed for the boys."

    • Ryan Greenberg scored for No. 11 Tolland in the first half of a 1-0 victory over No. 6 Montville in the Class M second round. Buddy Dewaine made six saves for Montville, which finished the season 14-3-4, the third most wins in program history. The Indians honored former program All-Americans Tyler Leeman and Anthony Occhialini with copies of their framed jerseys prior to the game. Montville broke the team record for shutouts in a season with 14 and the record for lowest goals-against average with 0.52 (11 goals in 21 games). Tolland is 12-5-1.

    H.S. volleyball

    • Waterford coach Beau Lucas called it a "rough match" because of the errors his team made, but the Lancers also had aces. Plenty of aces. Sarah Pacheco and Vanessa Kobyluck each served for 12 aces and Sarah Lathrop added eight as No. 7 Waterford blanked No. 10 Bullard-Havens 25-11, 25-17, 25-15 in the Class M second round. Pacheco also had six kills and Kobyluck 22 assists for the Lancers (16-6), which had a bye in the first round. Waterford will play No. 15 East Haven in the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. Friday in Waterford.

    Tigers will open at home

    • The Connecticut Tigers, beginning their sixth season at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, will open the 2015 season at home, meeting the Tri-City ValleyCats on Friday, June 19.

    The Tigers are the New York-Penn League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play a 76-game schedule that runs through early September.

    Game times will remain the same next season, with all Monday through Saturday games at Dodd Stadium beginning at 7:05 p.m. and Sunday games beginningat 4:05 p.m. Single-game ticket prices will also remain the same in 2015 with premium box seats at $10 per ticket, reserved box seats $9, and grandstand seats $8. Tickets to "The Yard" Bar & Grill also remain at $20.

    Season tickets are on sale now and mini-plans will go on sale Monday, Nov. 17.
