Torrington — Police in Torrington say a standoff has ended peacefully, hours after an armed man barricaded himself in a home.

Police had negotiated with the 60-year-old man for hours before he left the house and was taken into custody just before 2 a.m. Saturday. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Officers had gone to the home on Torringford Street at about noon Friday after getting a report of an emotionally disturbed person who fired a weapon.

A SWAT team was called to the scene. Authorities blocked off the street and told nearby residents to stay in their homes.

Police say there were reports of gunshots shortly after noon. Witnesses said they heard another gunshot at about 5:45 p.m.
