Police: 80-year-old drives wrong way for 3 miles on MassPike
NEWTON, Mass. (AP) — Police say three vehicles crashed trying to avoid an 80-year-old Westwood man who drove three miles in the wrong direction on the Massachusetts Turnpike before striking a median barrier.
A state police spokesman says the driver had initially been headed toward Boston but went west in the eastbound lanes on Monday afternoon. The man drove his Cadillac into a median in Newton.
He was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
Three other cars crashed in the breakdown lane. No one was hurt.
Police said Tuesday the man will be cited for negligent operation of a motor vehicle, wrong way operation, and marked lanes violation. Because he was not arrested, but will be called to court at a later date, his name was not released.
