Hartford police seize 10 pounds of 'sizzurp'

Detectives arrested a man and a woman who they said were selling large amounts of a concoction of illegal drugs known as "sizzurp."

Miguel "Miggy" Ortiz, 22, of Garden Street in East Hartford, and Aiveniece Estrada, 21, of Whitman Street in New Britain, were arrested Wednesday on drug charges including possession of narcotics, possession with intent to sell and illegal obtaining/sale of prescription medicine, police said.

In September, Vice and Narcotics detectives began investigating a man who was known to sell large amounts of "sizzurp," which is prescription cough syrup with codeine and promethazine, mixed with soda and sometimes other things, according to police. Also known as "purple drank" or "lean," it produces a euphoric high.

Detectives were able to conduct what police call controlled purchases with the suspect, who they identified as Ortiz. The buys resulted in the seizure of 60 ounces, or 3.75 pounds, of the codeine and soda mixture, Deputy Chief Brian Foley said. Police later obtained a warrant for his arrest.

On Wednesday, investigators got a tip that Ortiz was in a car with a large amount of "sizzurp." Detectives were able to stop the vehicle as it parked inside Pope Park, and they found several bottles — more than 100 ounces, or 6 pounds — of "sizzurp" plus two prescription bottles of cough medicine with promethazine and codeine.

Police said they also found a bag of marijuana.
