Police make arrest in New London abduction attempt

New London — City police have made an arrest in a reported attempt at abduction of a 9-year-old girl on State Pier Road last month.

Officers were called to 93 State Pier Road on Aug. 3 after the girl reported a man trying to coax her into the cab of his truck. She said he told her that her mother had sent him to pick her up. The girl had fled to the apartment of a family member, who then called the police.

On Tuesday, police said they were able to identify the man in the truck and have arrested him on a warrant in connection with the incident. Stephen Cardoza, 31, of 77 Briar Lane, Norwich, has been charged with risk of injury to a child, public indecency, third-degree criminal trespass and breach of peace. He was released after posting a $50,000 cash surety bond.
