    Man dead after Plainfield manhunt

Plainfield — A man is dead Tuesday after a large police manhunt in the area of Deibler Lane and Black Hill Road.

Plainfield officers and state police began the search about 3:15 p.m., after a man was reported carrying a gun in the area. Police located the man in some woods, and there was an exchange of gunfire, according to a news release issued by state police Tuesday night. The man fled on foot, the release said. Residents in the area were advised to shelter in place while police, including a tactical team, continued the search using a Plainfield police drone and a state police helicopter.

The man later was found dead in the woods, according to the release. No officers were injured.

Detectives from the Central District Major Crime Squad assisted and have taken over the investigation, at the request of the Danielson State Attorney's Office, the release said. Further details, including the identity of the deceased, were not available late Tuesday.
