Pete Yorn worth the drive to Hamden

There are a lot of folks who seem to regard the ability to write catchy pop songs as something easily learned and/or not worthy of respect — and folks from Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello to Ryan Adams and Taylor Swift have felt critical scorn for their gifts. My thought is that these critics have never actually tried to write a pop song. Pete Yorn has, though — and it turns out he's damned good at it. If Yorn never became the huge star anticipated after his "musicforthemorningafter" debut, he's nonetheless banked an estimable catalog of greatness. His latest album, "ArrangingTime," features wonderful songs like "She Was Weird" and "Halifax," and Yorn is an engaging and pleasantly self-effacing performer. Hop in the car and catch his act Friday at the Ballroom at the Outer Space, 295 Treadwell St., Hamden. It's $30; call (203) 288-6400.
