    Local roundup: Mitchell hands Coast Guard its first loss

    New London — Hasani Williams' three-point play with 2.2 seconds left gave Mitchell College an 84-83 win over Coast Guard Academy in a nonleague men's basketball game Saturday.

    Williams made a layup to tie the game at 83-83 and sank a free throw for the game-winner. Coast Guard, which suffered its first loss of the season, couldn't get a shot off before the final buzzer.

    Domenico Santiago scored 27 points with 19 rebounds for Mitchell (3-3), which led 48-42 at halftime. Mitchell also got 17 points and 10 rebounds from Steffan Brunson, Williams scored 20 and Matt Finke had eight assists.

    Justin Kane had 18 points and eight rebounds, Packy Witkowski scored 21, Noah Baldez had 12 points and Tyler Perez came off the bench for 17 points and seven rebounds for Coast Guard (7-1).

    In other games:

    • Connecticut College beat Roger Williams in a nonleague game 78-68. David Labossiere had 29 points and five steals, Dan Draffan had 17 points and nine rebounds and Ryan Omslaer had 10 points and nine rebounds for Conn (3-5).

    • Avery Point lost to Northern Essex Community College 87-65. Elijah Malboeuf-Boyd, Trevor Yeomans of Waterford and Alec Gomes of Norwich scored 16 points each and Montville's John Domijan scored 13 for the Pointers (4-9).

    Women's basketball

    • Mitchell College remained unbeaten in the New England Collegiate Conference with a 79-68 win over New England College. Kelsey Hernandez had 18 points, six rebounds and five assists, Le'Sandra Turner had 16 points and nine rebounds and Marissa Sweeney came off the bench for 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Mariners (4-3, 4-0).

    • Coast Guard was outscored 21-9 in the third quarter and went on to lose to Babson in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference game, 65-54. Freshman Kyra Hartman scored 18 points and Micaela Martinelli had seven rebounds for Coast Guard (3-6, 2-1), which trailed 27-24 at halftime.

    • Trinity beat Conn College 77-66 in a game between two New England Small College Athletic Conference teams which didn't count toward league standings. Sami Ashton scored 25 points and Kylie Caouette came off the bench for 24 points and six rebounds for Conn (8-2).

    • Waterford's Mia Brennan scored 37 points as Avery Point lost to Sullivan County Community College of New York 85-68. Rebekah Sanders of Quaker Hill had 12 points and 15 rebounds, New London's Kenya Capers had 10 rebounds and Brennan had five steals, four rebounds and three assists for the Pointers (7-3), ranked No. 7 in NJCAA Division III.   

    Wrestling

    • No. 25 Coast Guard won the final seven matches and beat Castleton 37-14. Coast Guard (1-1) trailed 14-0 after three matches. Matt McGowan (149 pounds), AJ Aeberli (174), Paul Detwiler (184) and heavyweight Patrick Irwin had pins for Coast Guard and teammates Christian Gosch (157), Nick Lemke (165) and Jon Wagner (197) also won their matches.

    Women's hockey

    • Jordan Cross had a goal and an assist as Conn College beat Manhattanville 3-0. Erin Dillon and Paige Michel scored goals, Sammie Estes had an assist and Bailey Mertz made 14 saves for Conn (4-2-2).

    Men's hockey

    • Conn College led 2-0 after one period but Bowdoin came back for a 5-2 win in a NESCAC game. AJ Wallace and Paul Capozzi scored goals and Sam Stone, Matt Michaud, Jacob Moreau and Colin McCabe had assists for the Camels (2-6-1, 0-5-1). 

    H.S. girls' fencing

    • Waterford's Alex Cole went 6-0 with 30 points as the Lancers beat Griswold 6-3 and Ledyard 7-2 in foil while Ledyard beat Griswold 6-3. Jessalyn Krenicki scored 30 points to lead Waterford to a 9-0 win over Ledyard in epee.

    • NFA posted a pair of wins in epee, beating Bacon 7-2 and East Lyme 8-1, and Bacon beat East Lyme 6-3. In foil, East Lyme beat NFA and Bacon by 5-4 scores and Bacon beat NFA 6-3.

    H.S. boys' fencing

    • NFA swept East Lyme, winning 6-3 in both epee and foil, and beat Bacon 7-2. East Lyme beat Bacon 7-2 in foil.

    • Griswold swept a tri-meet in foil, beating Waterford 6-3 and Ledyard 5-4, while Ledyard beat Waterford 5-4. In epee, Ledyard beat Waterford 9-0 behind Dante Priebe's 15 points.

    Junior cross country

    • Three locals runners, all members of the Mohegan Striders, competed in the USATF Junior Olympic National Cross Country Championships in Reno, Nev. Luke Anthony of East Lyme was 42nd in the boys ages 13-14 division 4K race with a time of 15:05. Sophie Miner of Franklin finished 161st in the girls 9-10 3K race in 14:52 and Norwich's Eliana Duclos finished 146th in the girls 13-14 4K race in 17:59.
