Property tax exemptions available for veterans living in Groton

Groton — The assessor’s office has issued a reminder to all Groton residents that veteran exemptions are available for property taxes.

The last filing day for a veteran exemption for the 2019 Grand List is Sept. 30, 2019. Widows and widowers also may be entitled to veteran exemptions. An original or certified copy of an honorable discharge, or DD214, must be recorded with the town clerk’s office. To receive an exemption, the individual must be a resident of Groton and have served 90 or more cumulative days, except where the war lasted less than 90 days.

Disabled veterans who have established their eligibility for exemption are no longer required to file an annual statement from the Veterans Administration unless there is a change in the percentage of disability.

If a married veteran has a total 2018 income of $68,900 or less, or a single veteran has an income of $61,000 or less, they may apply for additional veteran exemptions at the assessor’s office. The last day to file for these benefits is Sept. 30, 2019. Proof of income for these programs is required at the time of application.

People with questions can contact the assessor’s office at (860) 441-6660 or visit Town Hall, 45 Fort Hill Road, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, except Labor Day.
