Twenty-three-year-old Michael Rios of Norwich is expected to plead guilty next month in New London Superior Court to the shaking death of the 13-month old daughter of his former girlfriend.

He has been free on a $100,000 bond since he was charged May 6, 2013, with first-degree manslaughter and risk of injury to a minor.

His attorney, Christopher L. Morano, indicated during Rios’ court appearance Thursday that Rios would be accepting a plea offer from prosecutor Theresa Anne Ferry­man at his next court date, which is July 17.

Family members of victim Madison Alexa Reid have been attending Rios’ court appearances wearing pink T-shirts in her honor. Thursday morning, one of them became ill in the courtroom, prompting judicial officials to call 911.

Rios had been dating Madison’s mother, Elizabeth Reid, for a few months and had agreed to take care of the toddler and drop her off at day care after Reid left for work on May 2, 2013, according to Norwich police. The child was unconscious and bleeding from the brain when he took her that day to The William W. Backus Hospital. She was flown to the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, where she underwent emergency surgery, but she succumbed to her injuries during the early-morning hours of May 3.

Rios told police that Madison became unresponsive after falling from a bed and he “shook her very hard” to get her to respond.
