Stonington seeks local artists to design future veterans monument

Stonington ― The town has put out a call to local artists to help design the future Veterans Memorial, to be located on the grounds of the police department.

The eight-sided monument with porcelain sides will feature art honoring the service of veterans who have ties to Stonington since World War I.

The art can be in a variety of mediums, including graphic art, painting or drawing, and will be featured on the 31.5 inch by 35.5 inch porcelain slabs. Each slab will also include one of the seven divisions of the armed forces and the town seal on the eighth side.

Submissions are limited to individuals who reside in Stonington or who have a business in Stonington and should include a written description of the artist’s vision as well as a draft rendering of the proposal. The selected artist or collaborative group or artists will receive a $10,000 cash prize along with recognition on the future site of the monument.

The deadline for submissions is Nov. 4 at 4 p.m., and the winning artist or group must complete the final design by the end of the year.
