Cumbersome, yes, but jury duty is necessary

A recent letter expressing frustration with the current system of calling citizens for jury service was understandable, "His jury duty boring and big waste of time, (Feb. 19). Jurors often wait all day only to learn that their services are not required. The current system: one day, one trial is an effort to reduce the burden and provide some certainty to people with busy schedules, child care issues and other demands.

It was much more onerous in the past, with people being called for long periods of time. Both the lawyers who must work within this system and the judges who must administer it are open to suggestions from the public, suggestions that would make the system more efficient and less burdensome. Nevertheless, no one who has ever had to bring a claim wants to give up a system that sets the United States apart from the rest of the world.
