Milford — Lyman Memorial/Windham Tech’s Cameron Sammarco struck gold Saturday when he won the the 170-pound state championship during the CIAC Class M wrestling tournament at Jonathan Law High School.

The top-seeded Sammarco, fresh off a victory in last week’s Eastern Connecticut Conference tournament, survived a tough semifinal match with Berlin’s Alden DeJesus, escaping with a 4-2 victory, but needed just 55 seconds to pin No. 2 seed Ahmed Hernandez of Platt in the final.

Sammarco was the only local champion and finalist in Class M.

There were five local third-place finishers in Class M — Ledyard’s Tatianna Irizarry (106), LM/WT’s Hunter Sanchez (120), LM/WT’s Nehemiah Czelusniak (132), New London’s Kanye Nance (160) and new London’s Henry Santan-Liriano (285), while the Whalers’ Kaiden Smith (220) finished fourth and three wrestlers placed sixth: Ledyard’s Josiah Estriplet (113), New London’s Andy Martinez-Soliz (120) and New London’s Trevin Robledo-Thompsno (170).

Avon edged RHAM 196.5-196 for the team title while New London finished seventh (117) and LM/WT eighth (95).

In the Class LL meet at Trumbull, top-seeded Brayden Soleau of East Lyme/Norwich lost to No. 2 Dominic Iaquinto of Danbury 5-4 in the 182 final and teammate Lincoln Carlson, the No. 2 seed at 150, lost to top-seeded Drayvn Roberts of East Hartford 4-2. J.J. Morse (145) added a fourth as the Vikings placed 13th overall with 87.5 points.

NFA finished 11th with 102 points as Jaiden James (120) and Thomas Brunelli (152) each finished third, Zaire Wallace (182) was fourth and Dugan Marsh (138) was sixth. Trumbull won the team title with 181 and East Hartford was second with 177.5.

And in the Class L meet at Guilford, second-seeded Naszier Matthews of Fitch was beaten by No. 1 James Duhancik of Stratford 9-2 in the 220 final. Matthews was the only place-winner for the Falcons, who tied for 16th with 41. Xavier won the meet with 293.5 and New Milford was second with 269.

Cheerleading

• East Lyme, Waterford and Plainfield were crowned ECC divisional champions at Waterford. East Lyme won the Division I title with 170.5 points while Fitch finished second and NFA third, Waterford won the Division II title with 174.2 points followed by Killingly and Bacon Academy, and Plainfield captured the Division III title with 145.3 points followed by Montville and Griswold. Wheeler was the recipient of the annual Colby Sousa Spirit Award.

Boys’ basketball

• NFA finished the regular season with a 10-10 record after defeating Glastonbury 80-66 in the ECC-CCC Challenge at Fitch. Tony Williams led the Wildcats with 31 points and 11 steals while Armanee Davis added 14 points and Camron Sinvil had 13 points and 15 rebounds. Killingly beat Tolland 66-33 and Windham beat Manchester 63-56 in the other two games at Fitch.

• Evan Merchant scored 15 points as Griswold defeated Wheeler 57-39 in a matchup of ECC divisional champions on Friday night. Christian Russell added 14 and Jeff Souvenance had 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Wolverines (17-3), winners of Division III, while Deondre Bransford led the Division IV champion Lions (14-5) with 14 points.

• Charlie Sahadi hit a late 3-pointer to put Old Lyme ahead for a good as the Wildcats beat Norwich Tech 60-57 in a non-conference game on Friday night. Leland Hine went 9-for-10 from the field and scored 22 points for Old Lyme (6-13) as did Caden Monte. Josh Hanks scored 23 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead the Warriors (5-15) while Bradley Saint Louis had 15 points and Jack Gahrman 11.

• Robbie Scavello had 20 points and eight assists as Stonington qualified for the Division III state tournament with a 62-57 win over Sport Sciences of Hartford on Friday night. Luke Lowry added 17 points for the Bears (8-12) and Aaron Lopresto added 10.

Boys’ fencing

• New London completed the first unbeaten regular season in epee in program history (16-0) and clinched the ECC Division I title with wins over Griswold (7-2) and Bacon Academy (7-2). Wilbur Mack Jr. went 3-0 against Griswold and Divine Adekoya went 3-0 against Bacon. Griswold edged Bacon 5-4 as Eli Springer went 3-0 and Michael Homme clinched the win with a 5-1 victory in the final bout. In foil, New London beat Griswold 7-2 as Andrew Mendez went 3-0.

• East Lyme went 2-0 in foil while Fitch went 2-0 in epee during an ECC tri-meet involving East Lyme, Fitch and Waterford. Ben Tan went 2-0 in foil for the Vikings while Noah Johnson went 4-2 for Fitch in epee.

Girls’ fencing

• Stephanie Flores-Aguilar finished unbeaten as New London defeated Bacon Academy 7-2 to clinch the ECC Division I title in foil with an 11-1 record. In epee, Grsiswold defeated Bacon 8-1 with Kalla Homme and Devyn Pelillo each going 3-0.

• Waterford had an unbeaten day during a tri-meet with Fitch and East Lyme, going 2-0 in foil behind Charlotte Morin’s 6-0 day and going 2-0 in epee as Hazel Siu also went 6-0.
