UConn rallies to beat Georgetown in Big East baseball tourney opener

Mason, Ohio — UConn rallied to beat Georgetown 5-4 in the opening game of the Big East Conference baseball tournament on Wednesday.

The top-seeded Huskies (41-13) face the Xavier-Seton Hall winner on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

The Huskies secured their 11th win this season when trailing after the fifth. Luke Broadhurst homered in the seventh to get UConn even at 3-3.

Georgetown regained the lead on Zaid Walker’s solo homer in the top of the eighth.

David Smith singled to open the bottom on the eighth. And, with Smith running, Dominic Freeberger checked his swing and perfectly placed a base hit where the second baseman would have been and Smith came all the way home on the play to tie the game at 4-4.

Freeberger took second on the throw, moved to third on an infield single by Ben Huber and scored on Jake Studley’s check-swing infield single.

Closer Justin Willis came on to get the final two outs. Zach Fogell earned his seventh win with three strong innings out of the pen.
