Driver charged with DWI after crashing into New London house

New London — Police charged a Groton man with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs after his van crashed into the porch of 276 Bayonet St. on Sunday night.

Police received reports just before 8 p.m. that a car had crashed into a house with the driver slumped over the steering wheel, Capt. Brian Wright said Monday. Police later found a 2016 Honda Odyssey had driven into the enclosed front porch of the house.

The driver, Yanxia Chen, 48, was taken into custody and later charged with driving under the influence, Wright said. No injuries were reported.

No passengers were in the vehicle, which sustained front end damage after wedging itself between a tree and the porch. The building inspector was called to the scene, Wright said, and the house suffered no major structural damage.
