Flock hosts UK puppet show at Red Barn

A puppet from "Meet Fred" (Tom Beardshaw)

Flock Theatre will host Hijinx Theatre, from Wales, on Wednesday at the Mitchell College Red Barn for an inaugural performance in Flock's new space.

The show is titled "Meet Fred," in which Hijinx introduces the audience to a cloth puppet fighting prejudice every day. Fred just wants to be part of the real world; he wants to get a job and meet a girl, but when threatened with losing his PLA (Puppetry Living Allowance), Fred’s life begins to spiral out of his control. This show, which sold out at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2016, contains strong language and "puppet nudity."

Hijinx and Inclusion Hijinx is an inclusive theater company based in Cardiff whose productions include learning disabled performers alongside performers without learning disabilities. To support their work, they have a network of academies around Wales that train learning disabled performers in a variety of skills.

"Meet Fred" features three of Hijinx's performers with learning disability, all of whom were heavily involved in the devising of the production.

Reviews of "Meet Fred" include "sharp, funny and vastly entertaining" from The Guardian and "the humour here is brilliantly black with mordant social and political relevance" from The Herald.

The performance is at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Mitchell College Red Barn, 629 Montauk Ave., New London.

Tickets are $25 adults, $20 students, seniors and active military. Tickets are required and are sold at flocktheatre.org/meet-fred.
