Guitar deity Sonny Landreth plays The Kate Tuesday

When you're pretty much a dolt, the idea of watching ANYONE who can do ANYTHING really well is always appealing. As a guy who cannot fix a flat tire or pay bills online or change the line in a weedwhacker without losing a kneecap — I know! You'd think it'd be a finger, right? — I am one of the globe's top clods.

But I'm at least aware of it. And so if I can watch someone really good spot-weld or perform a septal myectomy or win the Tour de France or install a new hot water heater, I'm delighted to have that opportunity.

Where am I going with this? Well, Sonny Landreth is playing Tuesday at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center. If he's not the greatest slide guitarist in the world — and his only living competition would be Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes or Ry Cooder — than I'll scrub up and perform a septal myectomy on you for free!

Landreth plays a swampy blend of blues, rock and Cajun/zydeco, writes great songs, has a wonderful band, is a very kind man — and, on Tuesday, will sonically rip your ears into confetti. How often do you see the Best in the Freakin' World?

Sonny Landreth, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, 300 Main St., Old Saybrook; $40; (860) 510-0453.
