The spoof 'Forbidden Broadway' plays Ivoryton Playhouse

    This show has legs!

The stage parody extravaganza “Forbidden Broadway” premiered in 1982 off-Broadway, and it is still going strong in various incarnations and locales — including, starting March 18, the Ivoryton Playhouse.

In “Forbidden Broadway,” actors mimic famous characters and performers and sing familiar tunes but with comically rewritten lyrics. The titles they satirize include “Wicked,” “The Lion King” and “Rent.”

The show is conceived, written and directed by Gerard Alessandrini, and he has rewritten it over the years to add in lampoons of new musicals that have become popular on the Great White Way.

“Forbidden Broadway,” Ivoryton Playhouse, 103 Main St., Ivoryton; opens March 18 and runs through April 5; 7:30 p.m. Wed. and Thurs., 8 p.m. Fri. and Sat., and 2 p.m. Wed. and Sun.; $55 adult, $50 senior, $25 student, $20 child; (860) 767-7318.
