NFA Playshop presents its virtual spring musical

Norwich Free Academy students perform a virtual version of "The Theory of Relativity." (Submitted)

NFA Playshop has produced its annual spring musical, but this year, it will be streaming.

A group of students at Norwich Free Academy have performed "The Theory of Relativity," which will be available for streaming Friday, Saturday and Sunday for $15 per device.

Access and more information is available at nfaschool.org/playshop.

“We hope this show stands as an example of how we’ve persevered through the past year-plus of struggles,” said Philip Trostler, director of NFA Playshop.

Trostler said 15 students, abiding by all health guidelines, recorded their singing separately and were filmed separately lip syncing to their recorded tracks. All of this took place before hours of mixing and editing was done to make this feel closer to a normal in-person spring musical. Duets and groups, he said, were all done individually.

"It’s a tribute, really, to our students,” said Trostler. “They were committed and diligent. It's remarkable that we were able to produce and perform three shows this year.”

Proceeds from the show will support the NFA Class of 2022.

From Drama Desk Award nominees Neil Bartram and Brian Hill, "The Theory of Relativity" is a look about people's surprisingly interconnected lives. Through a seemingly unrelated collection of songs, scenes and monologues, "The Theory of Relativity" introduces an array of characters experiencing the joys and heartbreaks, the liaisons and losses, the inevitability and the wonder of human connection.
