Songwriter Griffin House plays The Kate Thursday

    Griffin House (griffinhousemusic.com)

One problem with living in an area where there are so many colleges and universities? I've been hearing about Griffin House for years and just assumed it was a building on some campus. You know, like:

"Tonight's student senate debate will be held in Griffin House."

"The Toni Morrison Symposium takes place at 8 p.m. in Griffin House."

"NOTICE: The screening of 'Jules and Jim,' originally scheduled for Griffin House, will now happen in Tuskins Chapel. Oh, and the Film Club couldn't get 'Jules and Jim' so they're presenting 'Harley Davidson & the Marlboro Man' instead."

Now, I'm not saying there isn't a Griffin House building on a campus somewhere — there probably IS — but, for purposes of what you're reading now, it's important to know that there's also a highly regarded folk-pop singer-songwriter named Griffin House.

And he's playing tonight at the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center. Given the inability of artists to tour much since COVID, it's accurate to say House is on the road behind his very strong 2019 "Rising Star" album. And, in any event, House has a lengthy and solid catalog of literate, thoughtful material. Should be a good show.

Griffin House, 7:30 tonight, Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center, 300 Main St., Old Saybrook; $28; masks required along with proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test within 72 hours; www.thekate.org, (860) 510-0453.
